Real life has kept me from Tumblr lately but I had to pop in and make this post. Because something very dear to me is about to go away forever and we might not be able to stop it.

On Friday, August 31, it was announced that City of Heroes was ending. The entire staff of Paragon Studies, fired. Just the day before, they were talking about long-term plans for the game. There was a major update scheduled for the upcoming weeks.

CoH means a lot to me. It was my escape and a place where I could do or be whatever I wanted. I could log on and save the world, fly around the city, RP with friends for hours on end. It became part of my life and I don’t regret that at all. It was something I was -good at- when I didn’t have much else to bolster me. My URL here is a City of Heroes reference and I wouldn’t dream of changing it.

And it was important for more than that.

On Wednesday nights, a broadcast would go out in Virtue announcing a party in the Rainbow Resistance’s base. A night in a virtual gay bar open to the game. I never encountered anything homophobic relating, which is why I loved the CoH community. When someone said something -phobic in game or on the official boards, there was a line of people who would stand up. My “slurs in local” messages were never ignored by the support team, which were actually very few and far between, I’ve very rarely seen an online gaming community so quick and so willing to support and protect each other. More -welcoming- to each other. I never, ever got flak for being a girl, for being gay, from anyone I ever met in game. It was so so rare and so so wonderful.

That community is now trying to set things right for all of us. For everything that’s been done for me in my years playing, I can do no less. Consider the signal to Save Paragon City boosted, weak signal or not. Every little bit helps.

Also visit the Titan Network Forum if you’d like to learn more about the efforts to keep CoH alive. We could use all the help we can get.

Here’s a full page from the original art of Guy Davis’ Sandman Mystery Theatre (#56, p. 8), with series regular Dian Belmont and Nancy Fullbright. Davis entire style is antithical to the “typical” superhero story, and he drew this successful series for years.  Dian is an engaging character and was very much a key part of the book, and one of my favorite characters from one of my all-time favorite series.

Sandman Mystery Theater, and Dian Belmont, are seriously awesome. One of my favorite comics ever.
